Your Hair Loss Treatment: Finasteride
What is Finasteride?
Finasteride is a prescription-only medicine (POM) used to treat male pattern hair loss. It works by targeting the root cause of hair thinning; hormonal changes that affect hair follicles.
How does Finasteride work?
Hair loss in men is often linked to a hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT causes hair follicles to shrink over time, leading to thinner hair and eventual hair loss.
Finasteride reduces the amount of DHT in your scalp by blocking an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase. This helps:
- Slow down hair loss.
- Support regrowth in some cases.
- Maintain existing hair for longer.
What results can you expect from Finasteride?
Most men start noticing reduced hair loss after 3–6 months of consistent use, however more visible improvement (thicker hair or regrowth) may take 6–12 months.
Finasteride is not a miracle cure. It works best for slowing hair loss and maintaining the hair you already have. Results vary; some men see regrowth, others mainly experience stabilisation.
You need to take Finasteride daily for ongoing benefits. Stopping treatment usually leads to hair loss returning within 6–12 months.
How To Take Finasteride?
- Dose: One tablet daily, with or without food.
- Missed Dose: If you forget, take the next dose as normal. Do not double up.
Common Side Effects
Most men tolerate Finasteride well. However, some may experience:
- Reduced sex drive.
- Difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection.
- Reduced semen volume.
These effects are usually mild and reversible if treatment is stopped.
Uncommon Side Effects
Stop treatment and seek medical advice immediately if you notice:
- Depression or mood changes.
- Breast tenderness, pain, or lumps.
- Allergic reactions (rash, swelling, difficulty breathing).
