Haemorrhoids (piles)
Haemorrhoids, or piles, are lumps inside and around your bottom. While they can often improve without treatment, there are steps you can take to prevent and treat them.
What are the symptoms of haemorrhoids?
Haemorrhoids can often go unnoticed because they don't always cause symptoms. But when they do, it's important to be aware of the signs. Look out for bleeding after passing a stool, itching, a lump outside the anus, mucus discharge, and soreness, redness, and swelling around the area.
What causes haemorrhoids?
It is thought that haemorrhoids are caused by increased pressure in the veins of the anus and rectum, leading to swelling and discomfort. Factors such as straining during bowel movements, obesity, and pregnancy can contribute to their development.
What are the treatments options for haemorrhoids?
In many cases, haemorrhoids can settle down on their own within a few days. However, there are topical treatments or oral medication which can provide relief by easing symptoms and aiding in smoother stool passage. Speak to our pharmacy team about the options suitable for you.
