Safety First

As the days get longer and the weather gets warmer, we're all itching to spend more time outdoors. But with that comes a higher risk of injuries like cuts and grazes. Don't wait until an emergency happens to realise the importance of having a first aid kit in your home, especially if you have young children. From cuts and scrapes to more serious injuries, a well-stocked first aid kit can make all the difference in reducing the risk of infection and providing immediate care.

First aid kits include a variety of items that will help treat cuts, scrapes, and injuries including sprains and burns. Make sure to put your first aid box in an easy to access place so that anyone can access the kit, that way when an emergency occurs it is not about where the kit is but that it can be used for the situation.

There is not a one size fits all for first aid kits for the home, but the NHS recommends they should include the following items:

  • Plasters (in a variety of different sizes and shapes)
  • Sterile gauze dressings (including those for eyes)
  • Crêpe rolled bandages
  • Safety pins / Sticky Tape
  • Disposable sterile gloves
  • Tweezers
  • Scissors
  • Alcohol-free cleansing wipes
  • Thermometer (preferably digital).
  • Skin rash cream, such as hydrocortisone or calendula.
  • Insect Bite and Sting Cream
  • Antiseptic cream
  • Painkillers such as paracetamol (including infant paracetamol for children), and/or ibuprofen (including infant ibuprofen)
  • Distilled water for cleaning wounds

*Medicines should be checked regularly to make sure they are within their use-by dates.
