Frequently Asked Questions

How does it work?

Wegovy is a brand of medicated injection that you administer yourself once a week. There is a hormone in your body called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) that helps to regulate your hunger. Wegovy works by mimicking this which can lead to eating less and losing weight. It should be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

Will it be suitable for me?

To be eligible for treatment with Wegovy, you must have a BMI (Body Mass Index) of 30kg/m2 or over, or a BMI of 27kg/m2 or over if you have at least one weight-related condition such as obstructive sleep apnoea or high blood pressure. If you’re not sure what your BMI is calculate it here

It also cannot be used if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, and you must be aged 18 or over.

Please note that we cannot guarantee you will be suitable for treatment until you have your consultation with your pharmacist when Wegovy launches. Here, they will take into account your past medical history.

How much will it cost?

The cost of this injection gradually increases as the dose you are using increases.

Month 1 = £105

Month 2 = £105

Month 3 = £105

Month 4 = £175

Month 5 and each month following = £250

Are there any side effects?

Very common side effects of Wegovy can include headache, fatigue, and gastrointestinal effects such as nausea, constipation, diarrhoea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

When you begin your treatment (subject to pharmacist consultation) you will slowly increase your dose to the maximum over a period of 4 months. This will help to lower your risk of side effects. Your pharmacist will support you through this period and discuss ways to reduce your side effects further.
